Cleveland Browns sign OL Greg Robinson, waive Rod Johnson

The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran offensive lineman Greg Robinson and waived fellow blocker Rod Johnson.

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns have signed offensive lineman Greg Robinson and waived fellow blocker Rod Johnson.

The Browns announced the move on Twitter late Tuesday morning.

The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Robinson made 48 starts in 52 appearances over his first four seasons in the National Football League with the St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions.

A native of Thibodaux, Louisiana, Robinson was the No. 2 overall pick of the then-St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Auburn University. Robinson was traded to the Lions prior to the 2017 regular season and made six starts before missing the remaining 10 games due to an ankle injury.

The Browns traded up in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft to select Johnson out of Florida State University.

In 2016, Johnson was the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, a first-team All-ACC selection by both the coaches and the media and a two-time ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honoree, as well as a first-team All-America selection (Walter Camp), second-team choice (Sports Illustrated/Fox Sports/American Football Coaches Association) and third-team pick (Phil Steele).

Behind Johnson’s blocks, Florida State’s offense converted 321 first downs, including 149 on the ground and 143 through the air, scored 456 points, an average of 35.1 per game, and converted their opponents’ turnovers into 86 points.

The Seminoles rushed for 2,630 yards and passed for another 3,433 on 244 completions, totaling 6,063 yards on 939 offensive plays. Florida State threw for 23 touchdowns and rushed for 33 scores during the 2016 season.

With Johnson clearing the way, Florida State running back Dalvin Cook rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the three years he was a starter for the Seminoles, including a career-best 1,765 yards on 288 carries in 2016.

In order to complete the trade, the Browns sent the Nos. 181 and 188 selections to the New York Jets in exchange for the 160th and 224th picks. However, Johnson suffered a knee injury and missed the entire 2017 season.
