CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry was ranked as the 52nd best player in the National Football League’s Top 100 Players of 2018, and that did not sit well with the consistent pass-catcher.
Landry is determined to prove he deserves a better ranking when next year’s list debuts after the 2019 NFL Draft.
“My goal is to eventually be No. 1,” Landry said after a recent practice. “Honestly, it is an honor to be recognized among all of the top players in this league and to be recognized in the Top 100, but I think for any competitor… Well, I can’t speak for every competitor, but I know me -- I want to be first.”
And for where Landry ranks among the best receivers in the game?
Well, in his mind, everyone else is playing for second place.
“I consider myself the best,” Landry said. “I consider myself the most complete receiver. If you turn on the film, I do everything. I block, I play inside, I play outside and I come out of the backfield. My value is that much more to the team and to the offense. I consider myself the best receiver in the NFL.”
The numbers offer some support for Landry’s claim.
Over his four-year career with the Dolphins, Landry turned 400 catches into 4,038 yards and 22 touchdowns. He averaged 10.1 yards per catch and 63.1 yards per game to go along with 38 catches of at least 20 yards, seven 40-yard plays and 220 first downs.
The 5-foot-11, 208-pound Landry has two 110-catch seasons (2015, 2017) and two 1,100-yard years (2015, 2016) on his resume.
Last season, the Metairie, Louisiana native and Louisiana State University product caught a career-high 112 passes for 987 yards and a personal-best nine touchdown receptions.
“Just my playmaking ability on the field,” Landry said of what he brings to the team.
“Off of the field, my leadership and my energy. Being able to help the younger guys, being able to help anybody that needs it. I have been through a lot of things. I have grown. To be able to be there and be that leader for those guys is really important to me, as well.”
And that leadership will come in handy, especially during training camp, where the Browns will be featured on the 13th installment of the HBO Sports documentary series, “Hard Knocks.”
“I am excited,” Landry said. “It should be fun. Again, we will not get too involved in paying attention to that. Obviously, we have a goal in mind and we have to focus, but it is also an opportunity to show the culture and the type of football and the style of football that we want to be portrayed in Cleveland.”
