CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns are set to start the competitive on-field portion of the offseason program.

The new-look offense will get a chance to compete against plenty of new faces across all three levels of the defense, and excitement is abound as the players and coaches look to get more familiar with the schemes in a competitive setting at team headquarters in Berea today.

“I’m excited,” quarterback Tyrod Taylor said.

“It’s always fun to get out there and actually go against a defense. We’ve been polishing up our offense on air, so now, you finally get the chance to go against a defense and see how it comes together. So, I’m excited and definitely speak for the offense, as well as the team.”

During his seven-year career with the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, Taylor completed 793 of his 1,271 attempts (62.4 percent) for 9,056 yards and 51 touchdowns against 18 interceptions. Of those 793 completions, 116 went for at least 20 yards and 22 more were 40-yard gains.

In his three seasons with the Bills, the last of which ended with the snapping of a 17-year playoff drought, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Taylor completed 774 passes for 8,837 yards and 51 touchdowns against 16 interceptions.

Despite having to learn new terminology and teammates after being traded to Cleveland back in March, Taylor is comfortable with what he has learned from the coaches since the start of the offseason program last month.

“I have a great feel,” Taylor said of the offense.

“I still have to get live reps, or as close to live as possible against a defense. On air is fine as far as fine-tuning things and execution, but once you get a defense out there, it’s a whole other level of competition. I’m more so excited just to go against someone and challenge myself.”

Hue Jackson: Lake Erie plunge will be cleansing for Cleveland Browns

And with a veteran in Taylor under center, Browns coach Hue Jackson is confident the offense is where it needs to be at this point in the offseason.

“The terminology is different, but it’s still football,” Jackson said. “At the end of the day, the plays, it’s not a significantly different system.

“The plays are still football plays. How we call it and how we go about it is probably a little bit different. I think the guys have done a good job. I think Ty’s done a good job with the rest of the offensive staff implementing the system. We’ve kind of had a head start before getting on the field for Phase 2. I think we’re where we need to be.”
