Odell Beckham Jr. going social media silent ahead of training camp

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce he'll be taking a break from social media until July 1.

Whether he's posting paparazzi-esque pictures on Instagram or sharing his thoughts on his former team on Twitter, Odell Beckham Jr. typically isn't hard to find on social media.

It appears that might change in the weeks to come.

Taking to Instagram in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Cleveland Browns star receiver announced he'll be taking an extended break from social media. Per Beckham, the online absence will be coming as the result of his efforts to focus on training ahead of the start of Browns' training camp in late-July.

"Goin' away 'til July 1st for training," Beckham wrote. "Don't hit me unless it's beyond urgent. [A]ppreciate the love always. Time to lock in! #BootCamp see ya'll soon."

This isn't the first time Beckham has taken an online hiatus. Days after being traded to the Browns from the New York Giants this past March, the 3-time Pro Bowl receiver claimed he was "going dark" on social media in an Instagram post he would later delete.

Less than a week later, however, Beckham was back on Twitter, posting that he "woke up feeling dangerous" in an ode to his new quarterback, Baker Mayfield.

At his introductory press conference in Berea weeks later, Beckham admitted to initially being hurt by the trade from New York, where he spent the first five seasons of his NFL career.

“It is hard to explain. I can’t even put it into words. I was heading to dinner and I just remember seeing [Giants General Manager Dave] Gettleman calling," Beckham recalled. "I knew something was going down. I picked up the phone and took the call. It was quiet for a minute at dinner. It just was a lot. I do not even know how else to describe it. It was just a lot, a lot of emotions and a lot of thoughts that run through your mind. Your whole life is changing. It is still the same in theory, but it is changing. I just took it to process. I called my mom, I called this man [college teammate Jarvis Landry] and here we are today.”

This time, however, Beckham's social media silence doesn't appear to be fueled by frustration, but rather legitimate focus. At Browns' minicamp in Berea earlier this month, the LSU product spoke with enthusiasm of his arrival in Cleveland and the possibilities ahead.

“I’m almost giddy,” Beckham said. “I feel like a little kid with the excitement that I have, seeing Baker, seeing these guys, seeing ... you know we talk a lot about this offense, but this defense is something special and this team is really coming together.

“I’m beyond excited about the opportunity I have here to start over, a new team. Obviously, the goal is always going to be the same -- to hang banners. That’s what you play this game for. We know we got a lot of expectations. We got a lot of work to do and I think we’ll get there.”
