CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns rookie defensive back Denzel Ward has a nose for the football, especially in front of the hometown fans at FirstEnergy Stadium, and he not only forced, but recovered and returned one against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football at FirstEnergy Stadium.

On second-and-13 from the New York nine-yard line, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold fired a short pass to the right of the formation for wide receiver Robbie Anderson, and as the veteran pass catcher bulled his way up the field for a 17-yard gain, the first-year cornerback, and Nordonia High School product, went to work.

Ward got his right arm tangled up with Anderson’s and onto the ball, where he ripped it free before the receiver’s knee touched the ground. The ball bounced up from the ground and into Ward’s arms for the team’s ninth forced turnover of the season.

After corralling the loose ball, Ward returned the fumble up the left sideline for 13 yards before cutting back toward the middle of the field and carried a pair of defenders for three yards down to New York’s eight-yard line.

The fumble recovery was Ward’s third takeaway of the year, as he had a pair of interceptions in the Browns’ season-opening 21-21 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium.
