CLEVELAND — Once upon a time (back in 2014), Northeast Ohio was at the forefront in the cryptocurrency space, with a street in Cleveland Heights known as "Bitcoin Boulevard" where at least nine businesses were accepting the digital money.
Two years later, several of those businesses had closed, and the ones still open were no longer seeing many Bitcoin transactions.
Then in 2018, Ohio became the first state that allowed businesses to pay their taxes in Bitcoin. That was also short-lived, with a change in office at the Ohio Treasury.
Fast forward to 2021, and it seems like everyone is talking about cryptocurrency, so on this week's episode of the 3 Things to Know with Stephanie Haney podcast, I'm here to give you a primer.
If you're new to the space, get a beginner's tutorial on cryptocurrency from Bitcoin financial services professional Kaily Buemi and crypto and tech expert Joshua Holmes, who have very different ideas about where the trend is heading.
Between the two of them, Kaily and Joshua cover how cryptocurrency works, the differences between Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin, the controversy around Bitcoin's impact on the environment, Elon Musk's ever-changing tune, the blockchain, what crypto has to do with NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and why Tom Brady has laser eyes in his Twitter profile pic.
