Family of Artemis 1 NASA engineer from Strongsville hoping for launch later this week

“He is so pumped. He has been wanting to do this his whole life.”

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — There was disappointment all over the nation on Monday as the long-awaited Artemis 1 unmanned launch was scrubbed due to an issue with one of the rocket's engines.

For a Strongsville family, that means the anticipation of seeing a decade's worth of work come to fruition in space will have to hold on for at least a few more days.

Jon Millard works as an engineer for NASA. Specifically, he has focused on the engine for the Orion capsule that is part of the Artemis project. While Jon is at Cape Canaveral, his wife, Kady was watching Monday's launch effort closely.

“It was all systems go, except for maybe 40 minutes before,” Kady told 3News' Lydia Esparra during their interview at the family's home in Strongsville.

Kady looked back on her husband's ten years worth of work on the project.

"It's a huge deal. He's really followed this spacecraft from Europe. He's worked in Germany, he's gone to Paris," she says. “He is so pumped. He has been wanting to do this his whole life.”

Jon finally got a chance to take his family to Florida to see the massive Artemis rocket and Kady said it was out of this world. "Oh my gosh, it was cool. You don’t think that it's so big, but it is huge. It's giant."

The next possible launch window for Artemis 1 opens at 12:48 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. NASA, however, has not yet announced their next scheduled attempt at launching Artemis 1. After Friday, the next launch window opens on Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 5.

No matter when the launch takes place, Kady Millard will be watching.
