Girls in STEM | GEMS Club helps Olmsted Falls students shine academically

GEMS Club stands for Girls in Engineering, Math and Science.

All year long, WKYC will be spotlighting Girls in STEM, an initiative that inspires girls to embrace science, technology, engineering and math.

On Tuesday’s Donovan Live, Betsy Kling gave a look into Olmsted Falls Middle School and introduced us to the students partaking in GEMS Club.

GEMS Club stands for Girls in Engineering, Math and Science. They're an off-shoot of STEM classes that Polaris Career Center offers their school.

This girls participate in a variety of activities through the program. For example, girls working on mini motors, holograms, creating apps, working on an auto cad program, and building robots and circuits.

Bringing the girls together was the brainchild of Project Led the Way teacher Stacey Wisniewski.

“You can see their all engaged in what they're doing and there here because they want to learn more,” she said.

The club became so popular that middle school boys made a bunch of noise and now, they too will have a STEM club.

The club meets every week to take a deeper dive into STEM with these hands-on activities.

The girls call themselves Steminists have adopted the following quote: “Girls should never be afraid to be smart.”
