Girls in STEM | Inspiring kids with science magic show

"I don't really want to explain to them why it works and how it works, I just want to get them excited and interested."

ELYRIA, Ohio — A local professor has been inspiring kids with his science show for 10 years.

It's designed to spark curiosity in kids. After all, science is all around us.

Assisant Professor of Chemistry at Lorain County Community College, Dr. Regan Silvestri is half-showman, half-teacher.

But the showman in him is delivering a strong message.

"I don't really want to explain to them why it works and how it works, I just want to get them excited and interested," Dr. Silvestri explains. "If they can start to think about it, figure it out for themselves, it's a much more valuable education experience."

And it's a lesson not lost on the girls in his audience.

"It's not just like you are sitting there in a boring lecture and learning about science," says Isabela, one of the youngsters in the audience. "It's more interactive and there's volunteers."

"The reason i really like science is because whenever I'm learning about it, there's always more questions that I have," adds Emerald, another audience member.

And of course, explosions help.
