Girls in STEM | Local Space Campers return home

Two Northeast Ohio problem solvers take their talents to Space Camp.

It was an out-of-this world experience for two Northeast Ohio girls - a week at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Lillyanne Zilko and Phoebe Piepenbrok, both from Amherst, attended a week long robotics camp designed to engage campers in a STEM fueled competition.

Space Camp, a staple since 1982 that has more than 750,000 alumni, now features four divisions: Space, Aviation, Robotics and Cyber. Within each division are sections catered to various topics of study, ages and group size.

Each of the camp specialties focus in on problem solving using science, technology, engineering and math - collectively known as STEM.

For Zilko and Piepenbrok, their team was challenged to create and race a robot through a course. They were not only successful, they won.

Zilko was the recipient of a competitive scholarship, awarded after the nine year old conducted a science experiment and wrote a report about it (she chose the egg into the bottle pressure demonstration), designed a mission patch as well as submitting letters of recommendation.

Both girls want to go back to Space Camp saying the friends they met were the best part.
