Girls in STEM | STEM talent visits Cleveland during recent national convention

More than 6,000 professionals, students and industry leaders were in Cleveland recently for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Convention

The city of Cleveland hosted the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers 2018 National Convention earlier this month.

More than 6,000 professionals, students and industry leaders were here in town. That's a lot of STEM talent all in one place.

During the convention, Betsy Kling sat down with Romelia Flores, an inventor and engineer with IBM. This STEMbassador grew up in a small town without much technology to speak of. Her fascination with puzzles helped her learn computer fundamentals at the University of Texas.

Romelia has 47 patents to her name with another 30 pending. "Part of what my job is is to listen to my clients and understand where their problems are and understand what their challenges are and help them solve their problems," she explains. "Again i'm applying those puzzle pieces and saying how do I take technology to solve their problems."

As far as her advice to those interesting in pursuing a career in engineering or other STEM fields? "One of the key critical successes is networking and linking with others, communicating effectively but also having that passion for continuous learning," Romelia advises.
