I-76 East in Akron re-opens after semi hits bridge

Drivers faced an unexpected detour in Summit County.

AKRON, Ohio --A portion of I-76 East between the Kenmore Leg and East Avenue in Akron was closed for more more than ten hours on Monday due to a crash.

Investigators say a tractor trailer was hauling an oversized bulldozer, which struck the East Avenue bridge overpass just before 6:30 a.m.. The bulldozer came off of the trailer, blocked all of the lanes of I-76, then was struck by another vehicle. No one was hurt.

The bridge overpass sustained structural damage which required immediate repairs. A large section of asphalt on I-76 also had to be fixed. Two lanes were re-opened by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, the rest of the highway was opened when the bulldozer was removed two hours later.
