Warm weather will grace the South with pockets of showers and thunderstorms bubbling up across the southern Appalachians, South Florida and southeastern Texas.

Near-record heat is forecast to build across the Plains amid ample sunshine. Meanwhile, severe storms will ignite across the western Great Lakes as a press of cooler air dives southeastward. 

Downpours, large hail and damaging winds are forecast to be the primary threats from any storms. An unusual storm for the middle of May will continue to pound California with soaking rain, thunderstorms with small hail and mountain snow. 

Wet, gusty weather will spread inland through the Great Basin as showers dampen the Northwest.
