KENT -- Shi Huang, or Carl as he's known to friends, had a 3.97 grade point average and was ranked number 3 in his class at Kent Roosevelt High School, until he started struggling in advanced placement biology.
He's been a straight-A student since he came to the United States from China when his father started studying for his Ph.D. at Kent State University.
"The pressure is pretty great to maintain my grade point average and class rank and senior year, to get into a good college," Carl says.
Carl admits his accessed his biology teacher's web page from his home computer and asked his friend to figure out the password so he could look at possible test questions for an upcoming test.
"I just wanted to gain access to the test bank so I could study for the test and get a better grade on the test," Carl said.
Carl got 95% on the test but he also got caught. He received a five day suspension, failed the class, and faces juvenile hacking charges in Kent. His father says he believes his son was set-up by the teacher.
"He changed the password to my son's name 'Carl' and he's sitting there waiting. He set a trap and a trap worked. I can't believe how a teacher would do this," says Housan Huang, Carl's father.
The family has filed suit to try to get the "F" and suspension deleted from Carl's record and also to get the district to drop the charges.
"If the incident goes into court, the whole family -- not just Carl -- the whole family will be facing a very difficult immigration situation," says Housan.
Carl has been rejected by his top college choices, including Harvard, Princeton, and Duke, he says because of the black marks on his transcripts.
"I still regret doing it, every day, that it was the wrong thing to do," says Carl "I do believe I do deserve punishment but I don't think this should affect my whole future."
Kent City Schools has declined to comment on the situation.
