Mom Squad: Easy DIY spinners

Have a few cardboard boxes laying around? Maureen Kyle shows us how to turn them into a spinner for the kids. This is a craft that can keep them busy, too.

CLEVELAND — Because we've been ordering online instead of shopping in stores, we have a TON of cardboard boxes. So, any craft with cardboard is quickly becoming my go-to.

I came across a quick tutorial on how to make our own spinners.

Remember those as a kid? It's basically a wheel with string that you twirl and twist around. Think of it as the original "fidget spinner."

In any case, it's super easy to make and the kids get to put their own ... well, spin on it.

First, draw and cut out a circle from the cardboard. Mine was about 5 inches in diameter. I used a bowl as a stencil.

Then take a plain sheet of paper and cut out two circles the exact same size.

Before cutting the paper circles out, I let my girls color them. I told them to make the design "swirly" for a good effect.

Then we cut out the paper circles and glued them to each side of the cardboard circle.

Next, I punched two holes close together exactly in the middle of the circle.

Cut a string about 3 to 4 feet long. Take each end of the string and thread them through each of the holes. Tie the ends to create one continuous loop, with the circle in the middle.

Take a piece of the string in each hand, then spin away!

If you remember from childhood, you can spin until the string is really twisted up, then you almost play it like an accordion to get the momentum going.

This kept the kids hands busy for a while! Best part, I'm getting good use out of those cardboard boxes.
