Mom Squad: Egg hunt matching game for kids

Have a bunch of those plastic Easter Eggs still laying around? Maureen Kyle shows us how to turn them into a matching game for your kids.

CLEVELAND — Of all the things the Easter Bunny brings, for some reason my kids love those plastic Easter Eggs the most. They are scattered all over the house (and the jellybeans are magically gone).

Because they loved hunting for the eggs, I decided: Let’s do it again! This time, we’ll make it a matching game to exercise memory.

I drew a grid on a blank piece of paper for my girls. I told them to draw anything they wanted, but they had to draw two of the same things. My oldest understood that she was creating “matching cards." My 4-year-old got a little frustrated and I told her to just write her alphabet and we can match those.

Then, they cut the cards out and I put them in all those plastic eggs. To ensure there was no cheating, I was the one to hide the eggs around the house.

Here are the rules:

  • Find one egg, open it to see the picture
  • Look for the matching egg, but DO NOT move it
  • If it’s not a match, put it back where you found it
  • Try to remember which picture was hidden in each egg

We didn’t make it a competition because I didn’t want any fights, but you could always see which child finds the most matching eggs.

If you have a preschooler, you could match upper case letters with lower case. If you have older students, you could hide foreign language words in the eggs.

No matter what, if you have them laying around the house, you might as well put them to use.
