Mom Squad: Tic-tac-toe rocks

With the weather getting nicer, kids will want to get outside! Maureen Kyle shows us how to create tic-tac toe rocks to play inside or out and use their creativity.

CLEVELAND — Once the sun shines through the windows, my kids want to go outside and play. But with playgrounds off limits, we need to find more activities we can do on the driveway.

In the garage, we have a container of rocks. These are rocks the girls have picked up along walks that they have deemed “special.”

“Want to play tic-tac-toe?” I asked them.

“I’ll get the crayons!” offered up my 4-year old.

“No, we need rocks and paint,” I told them. Now I had them hooked.

We picked out five rocks each. They had to be roughly the same size and shape. These were going to be our tic-tac-toe game pieces.

I told them they could paint either an X or an O on the rocks with our acrylic paint crayons. That did not go over so well.

“Can we paint unicorns?” my 6-year-old asked.

That didn’t really fit my Pinterest vision, but it’s their game. So, I told them they could paint whatever they wanted, but they needed to pick only one color so we could determine who is X and who is O.

Once our purple and pink rocks were complete, we drew a tic-tac-toe board on the driveway with chalk.

Rock by rock, the girls battled it out in the sunshine. They sat in one spot, entertained themselves … and for the record, the little sister triumphed in a series of games.
