Alleged drunk driver crashes car into Lake Erie at Put-in-Bay

The driver of the vehicle was still behind the wheel of the car when officers arrived.

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — The Put-in-Bay Police Department received a call at approximately 6:30pm on Saturday June 27, 2020 reporting that a vehicle had driven into Lake Erie on South Bass Island. 

According to a press release, officers arrived on scene to find a Chevrolet Camaro that had crashed off the embankment and into the lake. "As officers went into the water and approached the Camaro, they found that the driver was still in the driver's seat trying to drive forward," the release states. 

The male driver, Jermiah Lamont Braswell, of Toledo, Ohio, told officer's that he was "stuck" and unaware of how his car ended up in the lake.

Witnesses reportedly told officers that Braswell was traveling at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway and crashed into the lake.

After submitting to field sobriety tests and failing a portable breath test, Braswell was placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Intoxicated (OVI). He refused a chemical test to determine his Blood Alcohol Content.

Braswell was traveling alone in the vehicle and no bystanders were injured in the incident.
