Officials arrest man wanted in brutal assault of 85-year-old Canton man

A reward of up to $3,000 was offered for Travonce Backie's arrest.

The United States Marshal's Service and the Canton Police Department have arrested the man wanted in the felonious assault of an elderly man.

On Tuesday, 32-year-old Travonce Backie was arrested in the 3200 block of 5th St. SE in Canton. 

According to officials, Backie is wanted for the brutal assault of 85-year-old Ralph White on Saturday, January 27. 

Marshals and Canton PD say that Backie and White were involved in a car accident over the weekend. While White was still in his seatbelt in his vehicle, Backie assaulted White, a retired steelworker, hitting him multiple times in the face and head area.

Backie is described as being about 6'4 and weighs roughly 195 lbs.

Law enforcement wants to remind family, friends and associates of Backie, that providing assistance to him could lead to criminal charges.

A reward for up to $3,000 was offered for any information that directly leads to the arrest of the violent suspect. 

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Travonce Backie is asked to call the United States Marshal's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at 1-866-4-WANTED.
