Cleveland police: Man fatally shot in Public Square

The incident occurred at 11:54 p.m. on Sunday night.

CLEVELAND — A 39-year-old man was fatally shot in Cleveland's Public Square on Sunday night.

According to police, officers responded to gunshots in the area of 50 Public Square at approximately 11:54 p.m. Upon arriving, officers were flagged down by a group of people pointing out a male down on the ground. Officers proceeded to perform aid to the male victim, who had suffered gunshot wounds. 

The victim was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by EMS and was pronounced deceased, with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner since identifying him as Casanova A. Mack. The incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Preliminary information has indicated that a group of people were participating in a dice game when the victim was approached by a male suspect, who shot him. The suspect proceeded to leave the scene on foot.

The suspect has yet to be arrested as detectives continue to investigate. Police say a weapon has been found, but nothing has been directly linked to the homicide.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb has released the following statement about Sunday night's shooting:

"We are saddened to hear about the shooting last night at Public Square. Any homicide is one too many. The safety of the citizens of Cleveland will always be my number one priority as mayor of this city. I have already talked with the Police Chief Drummond, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, and RTA Transit Police about immediate ways we intend to increase the presence of police and DCA safety ambassadors to ensure we keep public square safe and clean for all residents and tourists."

The downtown area is served by the Cleveland Division of Police Third District and Downtown Services Unit. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious and illegal activity to law enforcement.
