Two infants die in house fire in Cleveland; 3 other kids escape

The cause of the fire on Jeffries Ave. remains under investigation.

CLEVELAND — Two small children died in a house fire on Jeffries Ave. on Tuesday morning.

According to the Cleveland Fire Department, an 18-month-old child and one-month-old baby died in the fire, which took place at 7609 Jeffries Ave. Three other children, the oldest of which was 14-years-old, escaped from the house, while another who lives at the house was at school during the time of the fire.

The three children who escaped from the fire were transported to Marymount Hospital, along with their mother, who was not home at the time of the fire.

“This is a heartbreaking situation for the family,” said Cleveland City Councilman Kevin Bishop, whose ward includes the area. “This is just a tragedy.”

According to the Cleveland Police Department, Cleveland Fire companies responded to the fire at 9:50 a.m. Upon arrival, it was found that the second floor of the house had become fully involved in the fire.

The 18-month-old child and one-month-old baby were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by members of the Cleveland Division of Fire’s Fire Arson Unit.
