GUIDE: List of events in Northeast Ohio honoring the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these events feature a virtual option but there are a few in-person programs also scheduled.

Here's a list of various events being held throughout Northeast Ohio in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

CLEVELAND

Virtual 2022 MLK Convocation

Event Information: The keynote speaker is historian and Peabody Award-winning journalist Jelani Cobb, a staff writer at The New Yorker and the Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism at Columbia University.

Cleveland Cavaliers to Honor Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Event Information: The game will recognize the accomplishments of Dr. King. There will be video montages played on the Humongotron, to special routines from the Cavaliers Entertainment Teams, and a MLK-themed halftime performance by painter David Garibaldi.

MLK Day Free Computer Giveaway for Students K-12

Event Information: The event will feature COVID 19 testing and vaccination pop up clinic. Computers will also be given away to the first 50 kids tested for COVID 19 (please bring proof of enrollment in school).

Event Information: The event will include presentations by students commemorating Dr. King’s life and legacy, remarks from Tri-C President Alex Johnson and CSU President Harlan Sands, along with musical performances that include a gospel medley featuring “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by local recording artist Gerald Skillern.

AKRON

The annual interfaith and interdenominational City of Akron commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. King
Presented by: The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Coalition
Sunday, Jan. 16 | 5 p.m. (prelude musical devotion beginning at 4:45 p.m.)
Event Information: People of different walks of faith and no faith, across Akron will recommit to living out the vision of Dr. King. The keynote speaker is Ms. Angela Cornelius Dawson, the Executive Director of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health. The event will also feature the inspiration of various local musicians.
