Shooting at Beachwood Place leaves 1 injured, puts mall on lockdown; suspect in custody

Mall goers were asked to shelter in place for a period of time.

Beachwood Place Mall was placed on lockdown Saturday afternoon following a shooting Saturday afternoon.

Police said the shooting happened outside the mall near Saks Fifth Avenue around 3 p.m. and resulted in one man being shot, who has since been taken to the hospital.

Beachwood Police Chief Gary Haba said the shooting victim is in stable condition, and that the victim and the suspect likely knew each other. Another man was taken into custody. Police said no more than 2-3 shots were fired. A handgun and a large amount of cash were recovered from the scene, according to a news release Sunday night.

A second report of shots fired was called in near the main entrance of the mall, according to police. A 17-year-old girl was taken to the hospital and later released. Authorities are trying to determine if the two shootings are related.

Shoppers inside the mall said they were told to shelter in place for a period of time, but the building was later evacuated as police searched the mall to clear the area. Employees were instructed to close the security gates to the stores inside the mall during the lockdown. Some shoppers and customers reportedly took shelter in office space and storage rooms.

Police said the mall is expected to reopen on Sunday.
