Vermilion police takes heat after La. town with same name arrests teacher

Keep in mind: These are two different communities that are hundreds of miles apart.

Earlier today, WKYC shared a story about a Louisiana teacher who was handcuffed and arrested at a school board meeting after officials say she spoke off-topic and over her allotted time.

The incident sparked controversy and outrage across the country, and the teacher (Deyshia Hargrave) now says her first amendment rights were violated.

But believe it or not, this story also has a loose local connection, albeit an unnecessary one.

Hargrave is a teacher in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, which shares a name with the city in Lorain County, Ohio). Keep in mind, these are two different communities that are thousands of miles away from each other.

Unfortunately, many people were not aware of this fact, and apparently began attacking the Vermilion (Ohio) Police Department for arresting the teacher, even though it was actually the Vermilion (Louisiana) Police Department that did it. Yes, it can be confusing.

The unwarranted backlash got so bad that the Ohio department had to post a message on its Facebook page: "Please stop sending us your hate mail."

So the controversy appears to have subsided, although we should note there is also a Vermilion, Illinois. We certainly hope they aren't having the same issues.
