CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians have been the surprise team in baseball all season long, and they're not yet ready to settle on that being the story of the season.
Told that they couldn't keep up with the Bronx Bombers' offensive output, the young Guardians team was put to the test Saturday night.
Two gut-wrenching home runs to tie the game and then take the lead off the bats of Aaron Judge and Oswaldo Cabrera. A third home run, a solo shot, by Harrison Bader to once again extend the Yankees lead to two. It was playing out exactly as we all had been told.
The Guardians had brought back small ball, a brand of baseball that many find "disgusting", and that style wasn't enough to compete with power.
On the night Oscar Gonzalez was reunited with the baseball that he planted in the left field bleachers to send the Tampa Bay Rays home for 2022, it was a bases-loaded single by Gonzalez that would send the Yankees back to their Cleveland hotel wondering how they find themselves in a 2-1 hole against a team that was too young for the moment. The lights too bright, the inexperience too apparent.
