CLEVELAND — Terry Francona made it clear: Cleveland Indians slugger Franmil Reyes is not being disciplined.
However, until Reyes' COVID-19 test results come in, he is being asked to stay away from the team during their Summer Camp preparations for the upcoming 2020 MLB season.
Over the weekend, the Indians were made aware of a social media post that showed Reyes at a Fourth of July event while not wearing a mask with several other people. At that point, Indians manager Terry Francona announced on Tuesday that the team contacted Reyes and asked him to get tested for COVID-19.
Until those results are known, Reyes is temporarily being asked to stay away from the team.
Francona was clear in that Reyes did nothing wrong but in order to follow safety protocols for the entire team, the Indians will use this as a teaching moment for everyone.
The Indians are still awaiting Delino DeShields Jr. to return to the club following his positive COVID-19 test result. DeShields will need to test negative for the virus before joining the Tribe.
Francona met with the media via Zoom call on Tuesday as the team held its fifth-straight day of workouts at Progressive Field in preparation for the 2020 MLB shortened season.
The Indians open the season Friday, July 24 at Progressive Field when they host the Kansas City Royals.
