Many condos, vehicles and garages destroyed after large fire at Smuggler's Cove in Avon Lake

AVON LAKE, Ohio — Many individuals were displaced after a fire destroyed 12 residential units at Smuggler's Cove in Avon Lake

The fire broke out at around 8:41 a.m. on Saturday in Lorain County after a car fire inside of an attached garage spread to the nearby condos. 

Upon arriving at the scene, fire officials dealt with heavy fire conditions in a garage. 

"The structure has significant damage to multiple floors of the residence, including smoke damage and water damage to the unburned areas," said Avon Lake Fire Department officials in a media release. 

According to the Avon Lake Fire Department, no residents or firefighters were injured. 

Red Cross is assisting residents from the 12 units that are unlivable from the fire. Fire officials from the Avon Lake Fire Department are working to retrieve belongings from the units that were not consumed by the large fire. 

Six garages, three vehicles and a motorcycle were deemed a total loss from the tire. Another three vehicles were damaged due to the heat of the fire. 

Avon Lake Fire Department was assisted by Sheffield Lake, Sheffield Village, Avon, North Ridgeville, Bay Village, Westlake, Rocky River, and Fairview Fire Departments. Life Care EMS and Lorain County EMA also assisted at the scene.

At this time, an investigation is underway by the State of Ohio Fire Marshal and the Avon Lake Fire Department investigation bureau. 

The cause of the fire and the estimated dollar amount of damage are unknown at this time.
