Dinner Bell Drive In restaurant in Elyria criticized for allegedly racist sign

Protesters were seen outside of the restaurant Saturday.

ELYRIA, Ohio — An Elyria restaurant is under fire for posting an alleged racist sign.

Dinner Bell Drive In, located at 6340 Lake Avenue, had a sign that read "Black lives don't matter, All lives matter," in front of the business last week. Dozens of customers and others who saw the sign took to social media to express their this displeasure of the sign.

On Saturday, 3News visited the restaurant and the wording on the sign had been changed. Despite the alteration, our crews also witnessed several people protesting in front of the Lake Avenue restaurant.

"I'm shocked," Dejonna Williams told us. "Elyria is such a diverse place, I grew up in Elyria."

It is also being reported that several employees have quit the establishment. On Sunday, 3News' Tiffany Tarpley spoke with the man behind the message.

"I believe all lives matter, black lives matter; it was taken out of context really," the owners' son Robert Reynolds said. "It was and it was an honest mistake...I can't force a person to think a certain way. We live in America, where opinions and free speech [are] available and still allowed, just like they have a right to protest."
