Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine: Curfew won't apply to Browns home games

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on Thursday that Cleveland Browns home games will be exempt from the state's extended curfew.

CLEVELAND — When Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced earlier this week that he'd be extending the state's curfew, many wondered how it would affect Cleveland Browns home games, including next week's matchup on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens at FirstEnergy Stadium.

As it turns out, it won't.

Rather, DeWine said on Thursday that while the state is extending its 10 p.m.-5 a.m. curfew until Jan. 2, it has also issued a variance that will apply to events including Browns and Cincinnati Bengals home games, the Columbus Crew's appearance in the MLS Cup and the University of Cincinnati's appearance in the AAC Championship Game. Those in attendance at these events, however, will be required to follow proper protocols, including safe social distancing and the wearing of masks.

Under a current order, FirstEnergy Stadium is allowed a maximum capacity of 12,000 fans.

DeWine also said that he is less concerned about the coronavirus spreading at outdoor events that are following proper protocols than he is about those who are gathering at home or indoor establishments. to watch the games. On Thursday, DeWine announced 10 "Stay Safe Ohio" protocols related to the coronavirus heading into what he deemed "the most important three weeks" of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kickoff between the Browns and Ravens on Monday, Dec. 14 is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Additionally, Cleveland is slated to host the Pittsburgh Steelers in its regular-season finale at FirstEnergy Stadium on Jan. 3 -- one day after the current curfew is scheduled to expire.
