A New 'Blair Witch Project' Is in the Works

Break out your camcorders, a new Blair Witch Project is in the works!

Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced on Wednesday that they are partnering up to reimagine the 1999 cult horror classic for a new generation.

Horror mastermind Jason Blum will team up with producer Roy Lee -- who previously produced the franchise's 2016 film Blair Witch -- on the upcoming thriller. The original Blair Witch's found footage style was revolutionary at the time, and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a press release that the creative team is "thrilled to kick this partnership off with a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation."

Blum added in his statement, "I'm very grateful to Adam and the team at Lionsgate for letting us play in their sandbox. I'm a huge admirer of The Blair Witch Project, which brought the idea of found footage horror to mainstream audiences and became a true cultural phenomenon. I don't think there would have been a Paranormal Activity had there not first been a Blair Witch, so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I'm excited to see where it leads."

The Blair Witch Project earned $248 million and inspired hundreds of urban legend fan theories upon its release in 1999. The film eventually spawned two additional franchise films --  2000's Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and 2016's Blair Witch -- as well as Escape Blair Witch, one of Las Vegas' most popular escape room experiences.
