How do you follow up epic fantasy adventures in Westeros? If you're David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, you blast off into the galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm announced Tuesday that the creators of the Emmy Award-winning HBO hit Game of Thrones have been tapped to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. The new movies will be separate from the Episodes of the long-running Skywalker saga as well as the trilogy in development by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss added in a joint statement that they'd get started on their Star Wars projects following the completion of Game of Thrones' eighth and final season, which is scheduled to premiere next year.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since," their statement said.
