MEDINA, Ohio — Several turtles were killed in a shed fire in Medina Wednesday afternoon, according to the Medina Fire Department.

In a post on their Facebook page, the department said crews were dispatched Wednesday afternoon to reports of smoke coming out of a shed. When crews arrived on the scene, neighbors told the firefighters the facility was home to multiple turtles.

The crew successfully put out the fire and pulled out "approximately 10 turtles, which included two large tortoises," from the shed. They then used oxygen masks specially designed for animals to give the turtles oxygen therapy, but according to crews, "about half of the turtles didn't make it."

Medina fire says they believe one of the heating elements in the insulated shed may be have what caused the fire. An investigation is under way.
