Building strong bonds between stepparents and children: Mom Squad with 3News' Maureen Kyle

Many families across the United States are blended. And all parents hope their child and new spouse find a common bond. We get expert advice on the best way to do it

CLEVELAND — According to the Pew Research Center, one in four people have a step-relationship in their lives. Author and founder of "The Stephood Project," Lisa Goodpaster shares the importance of building strong relationships between stepparent and child. And, also, some missteps to avoid.

Goodpaster says more than anything, biological parents need to avoid negative talk about each other so that the kids don’t feel torn.

“Divorce is a hard thing to go through for parents, but it never ends for kids,” says Goodpaster.

“You know, it's Christmas, it's like I got to go to two houses, I got to go to four houses. So you always want to make sure that, as parents, no matter what we're the mom and dad this is your foundation because when we lose that, that's when we lose a part of ourselves," Goodpaster said.

In this Mom Squad episode, Goodpaster goes in depth with Maureen Kyle about the ways a stepparent can become a mentor to a child and how to find common interests.
