Lakewood restaurant El Carnicero to close

The Mexican eatery's last day of service will be on Cinco de Mayo, May 5.

CLEVELAND — Cinco de Mayo will be the last call for Lakewood restaurant El Carnicero.

The restaurant announced on social media Friday that the "modern Mexican cantina" will close after 11 years in business. Its final day of service will be its Cinco de Mayo celebration on Sunday, May 5.

"It's time to say 'adios,'" the restaurant posted. "Thanks to all of our wonderful guests, amazing coworkers + skillful purveyors, for the great memories, experiences + support of El Carnicero! we are extremely humbled that so many embraced ELC + that we were able to celebrate with you + succeed as long as we have."

The restaurant, located at 16918 Detroit Ave., will remain open for regular business hours through its closing.

Owned by Cleveland restaurateur Eric Williams, who also owns the popular Ohio City spot Momocho, El Carnicero boasts modern interpretations of classic Mexican dishes as well as a full bar.

Williams said on social media he decided to wind down El Carnicero in order to focus more on Momocho and spent more time with family and friends.

"It's been an honor being a small part of the Lakewood community + for a restaurant to survive + thrive for 11 years is an accomplishment for which we can all be proud; but it's time for a change," the restaurant's post reads.
