Yoplait unveils Girl Scout Cookie-flavored yogurts

Samoas in yogurt form?

If the Girl Scouts somehow manage to bypass you during their annual cookie sales drive, now you can get the sugary snacks another way.

They'll be in your yogurt.

General Mills' Yoplait brand is introducing three Girl Scout Cookie-inspired yogurts this month. The flavors will be Yoplait Whips! Thin Mints; Yoplait Whips! Girl Scouts Peanut Butter Chocolate, also known as Tagalongs; and Yoplait Original Girl Scouts Caramel Coconut, better known as Samoas.

"The Girl Scouts bring a particular taste that people crave," said Doug Martin, Yoplait's business unit director.

Martin says the cookie flavors solve the problem of finding a taste that consumers haven't seen before. General Mills has previously partnered with Girl Scouts of the USA on cookie-inspired breakfast cereals.

The announcement comes are Yoplait is facing increasing competition, such as Chobani's recent introduction of traditional yogurt to its Greek yogurt line-up and upstarts like Noosa. This summer, Yoplait, which General Mills bought in 2011, unveiled a new French-style yogurt called Oui.

In fiscal year 2017, General Mills' yogurt brands -- Yoplait, Annie’s, Liberte and Mountain High -- accounted for 15% of the company's net sales globally.

Martin said this branded partnership is part of a strategy to retain market share.

"There are 20 million Girl Scouts and people who love and support that organization," he said. "It’s a way to continue bring new attention to the yogurt aisle."

These Yoplait flavors are positioned to be not just for moms, but the whole family, he added.

Yoplait is far from the first food company -- or even the first yogurt maker -- to partner with another for cross-branded flavors.

YoCrunch offers M&Ms are mix-ins for some of its yogurts and Utz, Herr's and Doritos have boasted Tabasco-flavored chips.

In June, Burger King unveiled a Lucky Charms milkshake, while earlier this month, Oreo announced that its new mystery flavor was Fruity Pebbles.

For ice cream, Breyers has Hershey's Caramel Kisses, Oreo Cookies & Cream and Sara Lee Strawberry Cheesecake, as part of its Blasts product. There are also Thin Mints and Samoas flavors.

“Beyond the delicious flavor, the yogurts will also remind consumers everywhere of the power of Girl Scout Cookies," said Barry Horowitz, Girl Scouts of the USA's chief revenue officer, said in a statement about the new Yoplait products.

The Girl Scout Cookies yogurts cost about 65 cents each, according to Martin.

Yoplait was founded in Paris in 1965; the company first ventured stateside in 1971, according to the company's website.

General Mills stock closed at $55.89, up 5 cents or 0.09%, Monday.
