Hoarding cases prompt Cleveland APL to lower adoption fees

111 cats rescued this week from a home

CLEVELAND — Animals at the Animal Protective League in Cleveland are always in need of homes, but now, the need may be greater than ever.

This week, the APL received 111 cats in the latest case of hoarding.

“I think we certainly have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of these cases involving more than 100 animals at a time,” said Sharon Harvey, APL CEO.

Harvey said in the past 16 months they have responded to four big hoarding cases. In each case, more than 100 animals were rescued from a single home. Animals included everything from bunnies to parakeets.

Then, there was the chihuahua fiasco. In September, 84 dogs were seized from an overwhelmed breeder.

“Trend? Pattern? Hard to say,” Harvey said. “They certainly have increased in frequency and as you can imagine, placed an incredible burden on the organization.”

This weekend, the APL will drop the price of cat adoptions to $10 for adults and $25 for kittens. Chips can be purchased at an additional cost.
