How to apply for a tax refund if you spent time working from a home office

There are a few qualifications you need before you can apply for the refund. 3News' Neil Fischer explains the process.

OHIO, USA — As Tax Day comes to an end, many folks who had to work from a home office can still apply to receive money through the Central Collection Agency.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced businesses to shut their doors, and many employees started working from home.

Kevin Preslan, the commissioner of taxation at the Central Collection Agency told 3News that some employees who worked at a home office are eligible to receive a refund.

"Those who work outside or have no connection to where their principal place of work normally is, can request a refund," says Preslan.

As teleworking becomes more popular across the state of Ohio, more people qualify for the tax refund. However, Preslan says if you live and work in the same city, nothing would change.

"If you live in Cleveland and work in Cleveland, regardless of whether you telework or not, that money is going to be tied to Cleveland because that's where your principal place of work is whether it's at an office or your house," says Preslan.

Preslan tells 3News that there are a few factors you have to have before qualifying for the refund.

"It kind of really depends on the type of work you're doing, what the rules are in place for your employer, what your tax rates would be for where your residence city is in comparison to Cleveland's," says Preslan.

The Central Collection Agency will begin to focus on refunds at the end of April, according to Preslan.

Preslan says that if you apply for a refund you should hear back from the Central Collection Agency in six to eight weeks either asking for more information or providing the refund.

If you have not applied for the tax refund for teleworking, visit the Central Collection Agencies website, and then click on the "refund worksheet" and fill out the information.
