Akron police: Gas station employee shot while chasing suspect who stole tip jar

The victim, who works at Gas & Save, is in critical condition. Akron police say the shooting happened near the area of Delia Ave. and Wildwood Ave.

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect responsible for a shooting that has left a man in critical condition.

According to a release, officers were called to the area of Delia Avenue and Wildwood Avenue for a reported shooting at 12:37 p.m. on Thursday. When police arrived, they found a 25-year-old man with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers provided emergency first aid, including applying a tourniquet until EMS arrived. The victim was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical, where he is listed in critical condition. 

Police say the victim’s name is being withheld pending further investigation and notifications.

Investigators believe the unknown suspect entered the Gas & Save located in the 800 block of West Exchange Street and stole a tip jar from the counter. The victim, who is an employee of the store, apparently followed the suspect a few blocks down Delia Avenue before being shot. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

On Friday morning, Akron police released an image showcasing "a person of interest in connection" with the shooting, which you can see at the top of this story.
