LORAIN, Ohio — Police say the deadly shooting of a Lorain teen may have been an accident.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Monday in the 2100 block of E. 31st Street. When officers arrived, they found 18-year-old Gabriel Blevins outside with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he died.

Police provided an update Thursday, noting that they now believe Blevins' death was an accident. Police say the shooting was "likely caused by the improper handling of a loaded firearm by a teenage friend," though it remains under investigation.

Earlier this week, police announced that 22-year-old Antonio Monticue was charged with tampering with evidence in connection to the crime. He was arraigned Tuesday morning in Lorain Municipal Court.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call police at 440-204-2100.
