BEACHWOOD, Ohio — The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) has announced that it has captured a 23-year-old man wanted for a murder in Cleveland last year.
Task force members arrested Steven Cole at a hotel near the 3800 block of Orange Place in Beachwood on Friday. Cole is facing aggravated murder charges.
According to the Cleveland Division of Police, on June 19, 2023, officers were called to the 9500 block of Kempton Avenue at 10:15 p.m. following a Shotspotter alert for shots fired. Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by a person who told them that a male was down in the street.
Police found 20-year-old Demetrius Williams with a gunshot wound to the neck. Williams was taken to University Hospitals and later pronounced dead.
Authorities believe that Williams was traveling in a vehicle on Kempton when another car drove up to him and fired shots. After being struck by gunfire, Williams crashed the vehicle he was driving into parked vehicles. Cole was later identified by investigators as being involved in the shooting and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
“The success of our task force is due to the strong relationships we have with our partner agencies. Since 2003, we have been fighting violent crime with The Cleveland Division of Police by taking dangerous murder suspects off the street," said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot in a statement.
