Deadly heart attacks spike around the holidays

According to the American Heart Association, more cardiac deaths occur on Christmas Day than any other day of the year.

CLEVELAND — It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Yet, it's often the most stressful.

According to the American Heart Association, more cardiac deaths occur on Christmas Day than any other day of the year. The second largest number of cardiac deaths comes on December 26, and the third highest day in on January 1.

For Wellness Wednesday on "What's New," Jay Crawford and Betsy Kling were joined by Dr. Justin Dunn, cardiologist with Summa Health.

While we don't know exactly why there are more deadly heart attacks during this time of year, Dr. Dunn says it's important to be aware that several factors may lead to the increase:

  • The holidays can be a busy, stressful, time; research shows chronic stress can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease over time; the release of stress hormones can also lead to lead to an increase in high blood pressure and cardiac events.
  • Routines are disrupted; people tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less.
  • People are getting too little sleep, experiencing increased stress.
  • Many people may be ignoring or pushing aside symptoms of illness, even signs of heart attack, thinking a trip to the doctor can wait until after the new year

Also, Dr. Dunn talked to Jay and Betsy about the potential signs of a heart attack to watch out for:

  • Chest discomfort
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
  • Shortness of breath
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Nausea
  • Lightheadedness
