How to set (and keep) a 2024 New Year's fitness resolution

An Ohio gym owner says setting smaller, more short-term goals can make your resolutions more manageable.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Getting back into a fitness routine is a goal many set when starting a new year, but sticking to it can be a challenge. Fitness experts say you should start with a plan.

Nick Tomasello opened the doors to the Game Fit HQ fitness gym back in September 2023. He said his gym's mission is to give people a plan they can manage.

"Don't feel like you have to accomplish your larger goal right away," Tomasello said. "Make sure you are setting smaller goals each day and each month so that we have things that feel more manageable and are more rewarding, so the process is more manageable long term."

Tomasello said it's not just about learning new moves in the gym. He said nutrition should also be included in the healthy start of your new year.

"When planning your meal, you can also start simple. Let's just focus on one meal of the day, that can be breakfast, lunch or dinner," Tomasello said. "A lot of times thinking about changing your entire diet can be a lot to take in at once. So, lets focus on high protein, lower sugar breakfast."

The Game Fit HQ Fitness Center offers a wide variety of services to help people get started including meal plan services and training ranging from beginner to expert.

Tomasello said anyone interested in fitness, no matter the skill level, can make a New Year's resolution that involves expanding their knowledge of health and wellness.

"Anybody that's been in this space, there are always new things we can learn and things we can do better. So it's not just for beginners it's for people who have been here for a while too," he said.
