Investigator: Grief-stricken Clevelanders angry over year-long gravestone delays

Grief-stricken Clevelanders complain that gravestones they ordered more than a year ago still haven't been delivered as promised.

"I want my money! Give it to me or I'll call the police," said Melissa Fuentes.

Her brother, 41-year-old Michael Prock, was murdered while delivering pizzas last June.

"We still don't have a suspect," said Prock's sister, Sylvia Taylor.

The family said that without a suspect, they have no closure. And to make matters worse, they have no gravestone for their loved one who is buried next to family members at Brooklyn Heights Cemetery.

According to the family, Karen Hayes of the Casket Store in Parma promised delivery on Prock's birthday in October. Last June the family says it paid Hayes nearly $1100 or the full amount for the stone.

"I just don't understand how someone can take advantage of a grieving family like that," said Prock's wife, Sharon Nezat.

Hayes told the Investigator Tom Meyer that she's not a bad person.

"I'm not trying to cause extra harm to anyone at all," Hayes said.

Sam Sandoval says Hayes did the same to him. He ordered a gravestone for his father more than a year ago. He paid in full. He still hasn't seen the $1100 marker. In fact, he's not even sure if it's been made.

"I did have a problem switching some suppliers," Hayes admitted. "I'll look into this."

Sharon Tufts put half down on a gravestone for her Aunt Helen.

"I feel cheated," she said after paying Hayes $726 and having nothing to show for her money. Tufts placed the order in October 2014.

"She's got my 726 dollars, and she's used it for something else. She's ripping people off," Hayes said.

Hayes admitted 15 months is a long time to wait. "Some might have fallen through the cracks," she said.

The Cleveland Better Business Bureau gives The Casket Store its lowest rating of 'F.'

Hayes dismissed the rating saying the BBB allows anyone to complain.

"To me, she's not a person to trust," said Sam Sandoval.

"She's a liar. She won't accept responsibility," Tufts said.

"It's not true," Hayes said. "I'm not a liar. I'm not a thief. We've been late on stone. I'm not saying, I'm not."

About three dozen people have complained about Hayes and the Casket Store in the past several years. Hayes promised to make good on all pending orders.

Channel 3 news will follow up to see if she keeps her word.
