15-year-old girl shot in Akron; police working to identify suspects

The teen's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Investigators believe an unspecified altercation occurred just before the shooting.

AKRON, Ohio — An investigation is underway after a 15-year-old girl was shot in Akron early Thursday evening.

While police had initially said the shooting happened at Joy Park, the department provided an update Friday morning saying the location at Minson Way and Fuller Street was not in or at the Joy Park Community Center.

According to police, the incident took place at roughly 6 p.m., with witnesses reporting hearing multiple gunshots fired. The victim was found injured on the ground where officers administered first aid before she was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The teen's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, per authorities. Her name is not being released at this time.

"While the exact circumstances surrounding the senseless shooting are unknown, detectives believe an altercation occurred moments before the shooting," officials said in a press release.
