Akron Police Department: 2 shot including 7-year-old child following youth football game

A 7-year-old is said to be in 'very serious, but stable condition' after undergoing surgery for his injuries.

AKRON, Ohio — A 7-year-old child and 19-year-old man were shot in Akron on Sunday afternoon according to the Akron Police Department.

The incident happened at approximately 4 p.m. when officers responded to Lane Field in the 600 block of Vernon Odom Boulevard for reports of shots fired.

According to a press release, the child suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and underwent surgery at a nearby hospital for his injuries. He is said to be in 'very serious, but stable condition' at this time and will require additional surgeries for his injuries. The 19-year-old was confirmed to have been shot in the leg. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening.  

According to Akron Police, a preliminary investigation has determined that the victims were on or near the playground following a youth football game when an unknown male suspect opened fire. It is currently unknown whether the victims were the intended targets.

The suspect, believed to be about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and thin, fled the scene on foot following the shooting. The suspect was wearing a mask, a black hooded sweatshirt with a gray strip on the hood and black jogging pants.
