Akron police memorial honors fallen officers

"During the darkest days, these officers pay the ultimate price," Mayor Dan Horrigan said.

AKRON — Akron police and community members came together late Wednesday morning to remember and honor fallen officers within the department.

More than a hundred guests, including dozens of Akron police officers, attended the memorial to honor 26 fallen officers at the Akron FOP lodge.

“During the darkest days, these officers pay the ultimate price,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said.

Akron police chief Ken Ball read a letter from a young child thanking those in blue for their sacrifice.

As their names were read, roses were placed on a wreath to honor each of the 26 fallen Akron police officers.

Last week, 12 new officers were sworn into the department including a Bhutanese refugee, the first to become and Akron police officer.
