Akron Public Schools to provide free meals to eligible kids this summer

The meals will be provided through a summer food service program.

AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron along with Akron Public Schools will provide free meals for eligible youth (age 18 or younger) and summer day camp program participants starting today.

The program will run from Monday, June 12 through Friday, August 4. The week of July 3 through 7 is excluded from the the program. Meals will be prepared by representatives from Akron Public Schools and passed out at various community centers.

“Akron is proud to once again offer the summer food service program for our youth,” said Mayor Horrigan. “All children deserve to simply be a kid and not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. The summer food service program allows them to do that. I'm grateful to Akron Public Schools and to all of our community center staff for making this program possible.”

Information on the site locations and distribution times can be found in the graph below.

Children from households that meet the criteria below are automatically eligible to receive free meals:

  • Households that receive food stamps or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
  • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TNF)
