Akron Zoo welcomes their first ever musk deer fawn; Newly hatched Humboldt penguin to debut soon

Meet some of the new animals at the Akron Zoo.

AKRON, Ohio -- New hooves are prancing around Summit County.

For the first time ever, the Akron Zoo has a Siberian musk deer fawn among their animal family.

She was born on June 13.

"Siberian musk deer are native to the forests and mountains of Russia and northern Asia," the Akron Zoo says. "Musk deer are small, weighing from 15 to 35 pounds on average, and are known for their kangaroo-like faces and the "fangs" (large canine teeth) on the males. They get their name from the musk that they secrete during mating season."

The fawn is now on exhibit daily.

Meanwhile... A newly hatched Humboldt penguin chick took its first swim test last week. He's expected to make his public debut in late August or early September.

"The Akron Zoo is home to 13 Humboldt penguins, including the newest addition."

WKYC's morning team spent Monday meeting some of the zoo's coolest critters -- including Louis the lizard, who works as an animal ambassador.

We also got to take a sneak peek at some of the events coming soon to the Akron Zoo.
