City of Akron takes ownership of Rolling Acres Mall

The city of Akron has acquired ownership of the vacant Rolling Acres Mall.

The city of Akron has acquired ownership of the vacant Rolling Acres Mall.

No bids were submitted for the property last week during a sheriff's sale, leading Summit County Prosecutor Regina Van Vorous to file forfeiture and transfer the deed to the city of Akron.

In a news release issued Tuesday, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said, "This property has been stagnant for far too long. The next step is to work with my administration to devise steps for a long-term plan of first most likely demolishing the structure, which will assure the safety of Akron’s citizens in the area, and then determining a productive and profitable use for the land.”

Horrigan said the city is open to all possibilities for potential use of the property.

The news release also said there has been developer interest in the property, but no formal presentations were provided.
