Man sentenced to 15-20.5 years after pleading guilty to charges connected to deadly shooting in Akron

The prosecutor’s office says the case dates back to Aug. 12, 2023, when Dakinga York shot Veronica Bell following a physical altercation.

AKRON, Ohio — 40-year-old Dakinga York of Akron has been sentenced to serve between 15 to 20.5 years in prison for charges connected to a deadly shooting that happened last summer.

Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich says York pleaded guilty to the following:

  • Voluntary manslaughter with a firearm specification: A felony of the first degree
  • Aggravated assault: A felony of the fourth degree
  • Tampering with evidence: A felony of the third degree

The prosecutor’s office says the case dates back to Aug. 12, 2023, when “York shot Veronica Bell following a physical altercation.”

As 3News previously reported last year, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said the shooting happened around 1:50 a.m. in the 2200 block of 8th Street Southwest. Bell, 45, died as a result.
